HAINSWORTH, R. Circulatory YeSponSeS from hng in.ation in anesthetized dogs. Am. J. Physiol. 226(2) : 247-255. 1974.-Responses from inflation of one lung with different pressures were studied L using a) relatively intact dogs, b) dogs with denervated aortic baroreceptors and a controlled pressure to the carotid baroreceptors, and c) dogs with open chests and the inflated lung artifiSally perfused. Reflex tachycardia u sually resulted from inflation of normally perfused lungs with lo-20 cm Hz0 pressure. Reflex bradycardia usually occurred during a) inflation of normally perfused lungs with pressure of 30-40 cm Hz0 provided arterial baroreceptor input was controlled, b) inflation with 20 cm Hz0 immediately following hyperinflation, and c) inflation with 10-4-O cm Hz0 of an artificially perfused lung. Hindlimb vascular resistance usually showed a small increase during inflation at the lower pressures. At the higher inflation pressures vasomotor responses were variable and vasodilatation sometimes occurred. Although the mechanisms responsible are not known, these experiments define the conditions favoring different responses and help to explain the differing reports of previous investigators.

Effect of central CO(2) drive on lung inflation responses of expiratory bulbospinal neurons in dogs.
The purpose of these studies is to better understand the nature of the reflex interactions that control the discharge patterns of caudal medullary, expiratory (E) bulbospinal neurons. We examined the effect of central chemodrive inputs measured as arterial CO(2) tension (Pa(CO(2))) during hyperoxia on the excitatory and inhibitory components of the lung inflation responses of these neurons in t...
متن کاملEffects of pulse lung inflation on chest wall expiratory motor activity.
The effects of pulse lung inflation (LI) on expiratory muscle activity and phase duration (Te) were determined in anesthetized, spontaneously breathing dogs (n = 20). A volume syringe was used to inflate the lungs at various times during the expiratory phase. The magnitude of lung volume was assessed by the corresponding change in airway pressure (Paw; range 2-20 cmH(2)O). Electromyographic (EM...
متن کاملRole of the Autonomic Nervous System in the Circulatory Response to Acutely Induced Anemia in Unanesthetized Dogs.
Studies in patients with chronic anemia and in anesthetized animals rendered anemic have demonstrated that, within wide limits, cardiac output rises as the hematocrit falls (1-5). The fundamental importance of the autonomic nervous system in circulatory regulation in the intact organism (6) influenced us to determine its role in the profound hemodynamic changes that occur during the stress of a...
متن کاملBronchoconstrictor and respiratory effects of neurokinin A in dogs.
Neurokinin A (NKA) is the primary bronchoconstrictor tachykinin in the lungs of several species, including humans and has been implicated as an important mediator of inflammatory lung disorders, such as asthma. In this study, we investigated the effect of NKA on airway mechanics (lung resistance, dynamic lung compliance) and respiration (tidal volume, respiratory rate) in anesthetized, spontane...
متن کاملRight coronary autoregulation in conscious, chronically instrumented dogs.
Right coronary (RC) autoregulation and right ventricular (RV) function were assessed in conscious dogs, chronically instrumented to measure RC flow and RC pressure (RCP) as a hydraulic occluder on the RC was inflated. Dogs were then anesthetized, and RC autoregulation and RV function were again assessed. In the conscious state, moderate RC autoregulation was present with closed loop gains (Gc) ...
